Top Rankin Vibes

Reggae has always been my favorite style of music for many reasons, mostly because it presents important ideas that are hard to digest within music that is easy to groove with. This 60-minute mix features dub, reggae, and interpretations of dub and reggae mostly from Jamaica, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

“Ranking” is Jamaican slang roughly meaning to be powerful, stylish, and/or better than. Many singers featured in this mix use the word in their name as a form of braggadocio. In 1979, Bob Marley and the Wailers also released a song called “Top Rankin" which offered an ironic take on the term by singing about the need to stop competing and unite.
